Polls in the New Jersey primary for governor have officially closed Tuesday night, as of 8 p.m. The candidates on the Democratic and Republican side of the aisle are all hoping to make the November general election ballot for a chance to succeed Gov.

New Jersey primary voters have chosen their GOP nominee — and President Donald Trump notched a win in his endorsement belt — in one of two high-stakes governor's races being held this year.

Jack Ciattarelli has won the Republican primary election for New Jersey governor, CBS News projects. This is his third bid for governor. He lost the 2017 Republican primary to then-Lt. Gov. Kim Gaudagno before winning the 2021 Republican primary. He ultimately lost to Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy by only a few percentage points.

Ciattarelli has run for New Jersey governor twice before, and in 2021, he came within three points of unseating current Gov. Phil Murphy.

New Jersey and Virginia are the only two states that hold gubernatorial contests the year after a presidential election, and the races offer an early check on how voters feel about the new administration - as well as an opportunity for the parties to test out their messaging ahead of next year's congressional elections.
