Waymo has suspended service of its ride-hailing service in downtown Los Angeles after its vehicles were set on fire during protests against immigration raids in the area.

In January, a Waymo car was torn apart in Los Angeles. In February 2024, another Waymo car was smashed and set ablaze in San Francisco. And in July 2024, a man was charged with slashing the tires of 17 Waymo cars in San Francisco.

Los Angeles is still reeling from January’s deadly wildfires — and with the World Cup soccer championships and the 2028 Olympics on the horizon — Mayor Karen Bass has been urging residents to come together to revitalize LA’s image.

In one photo, at least five Waymo robotaxis can be seen engulfed in flames, with anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement graffiti scrawled on the doors.

At least three self-driving Waymo cars were burned on Sunday, with two others vandalised as protesters roamed around a limited area in downtown Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Police Department has issued a new "dispersal order" for the area near Temple and Main Street, in downtown Los Angeles, calling for people to leave the area. "Less lethal munitions have been authorized. Less lethal munitions may cause pain and discomfort," the LAPD said, in a statement issued on X.
