Republicans in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives have turned to a lawmaker from rural Bedford County to be their floor leader for the coming two-year session.

Party control in the state legislature could influence issues such as the status of funding for Penn’s School of Veterinary Medicine, abortion rights in Pennsylvania, and higher education.

Democrats will keep their majority control of the Pennsylvania state House of Representatives next year after holding onto a Johnstown area seat.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Three races for the U.S. House in Pennsylvania remained uncalled by The Associated Press on Wednesday, as vote counting continued and Republicans fought to keep their slim majority in the chamber. A House majority would give the GOP a full sweep of power in Congress alongside President-elect Donald Trump in the White House.

Republicans return to Congress for the lame duck session to decide on government funding, leadership elections in both chambers, and whether to cut a deal with Democrats or push the issue into next year.

Political control of the Arizona Senate was on the ballot Tuesday. Six days of counting show Republicans likely to not only retain control of the 30-member chamber, but to possibly gain a seat . The Senate is currently split 16-14.

Votes are still being counted in key U.S. House races, but according to CBS News projections, it looks like President-elect Donald Trump will take office with the Republicans holding majorities in both chambers of Congress.
