Astronomy on MSNVoyage to an asteroid and a cometAfter leaving Earth, Tianwen-2 will reach Kamo‘oalewa by July 2026. This tiny, elongated asteroid likely spans no more than 130 to 330 ft (40 to 100 meters). It circles the Sun at a mean distance of 0.9 to 1.1 astronomical units (AU: the average Earth-Sun distance) with a sidereal period of 365.7 days, similar orbital parameters to Earth itself.
Astronomers are using data from the recently decommissioned star-mapping satellite to help determine masses and more accurate orbits of celestial bodies closer to home.
