State Sen. Paul Bettencourt (R-Houston) took to X earlier this week, blasting Harris County for "STILL allowing many citizens to register to vote using private P.O. boxes." Bettencourt argued such registrations are in direct violation of the law he authored-Senate Bill 1111-which made such action illegal, barring certain qualifications.

The Texas Secretary of State's Office could cut funding for elections in Harris County after state Sen. Paul Bettencourt discovered more than 100 voters registered at P.O. boxes.

In a statement to Houston Public Media on Tuesday, Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Annette Ramirez said the office is reviewing the records associated with the two addresses at the center of the complaint and will promptly take any necessary action.

A federal court’s rejection of Texas' redrawn congressional map means the two elections are for identical jurisdictions — at least for now. A potential Supreme Court ruling could make the two races very different.
