In the early 1940s, North Kingstown stepped into America’s efforts to fight in World War II. Now NPS is recognizing the town’s contributions

The National Park Service announced Tuesday the designation of eight new communities as American World War II Heritage Cities, including North Kingstown.

With its rich history of “Seabees” and being home to a prominent Naval base, the town is is now among communities across the US considered an “American World War II Heritage City” by the National Park Service.

The U.S. National Park Service has named North Kingstown a World War II Heritage City, recognizing the town’s contributions to the war effort. This week, the Town of North Kingstown was one of eight communities nationwide to earn the distinction of being named an American World War II Heritage City.

PONCA CITY – Ponca City and Kay County are among the newest designations in the World War II Heritage City program that honors local contributions made to the war effort. The National Park Service added new jurisdictions in eight states on Tuesday.

Plymouth Township was one of eight newly named communities to receive the National Park Service's American World War II Heritage City designation.

The American World War II Heritage Cities Program was created in 2019 to shed light on the importance that different regions played during that trying time. 30 localities are already on the list, which will be expanded.
