“NOAA came out and said, ‘Hey, even though you did catch and release, if you guys try to target bluefin tuna again, we're going to give you a $2,000 fine,'" said Harding.
NMFS is a federal agency within NOAA, itself an agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce. Fishing without a vessel permit for bluefin and other Highly Migratory Species carries a $2,000 fine.
“A NOAA law enforcement officer visited Jennette’s Pier this morning and advised management that it is illegal for our customers to fish for bluefin tuna,” the pier management wrote on Facebook.
For several days a huge bluefin tuna were caught at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head, but the bluefin fun came to an end after an official visited last week, the pier said.
