The Red Sox reportedly targeted Giants top prospect Bryce Eldridge in their negotiations that led to the Rafael Devers trade.

Papelbon said he’d been part of that type of scenario himself. The former closer said that then-manager Terry Francona told him to throw at Manny Ramirez after the slugger had been traded to the Chicago White Sox in 2010.

The trade this week that sent Devers to the San Francisco Giants has divided many around the organization. The nine-year veteran is now the third homegrown All-Star the organization either traded or let walk in free agency over the last five years.
