President Donald Trump says he’s taking over Washington’s police department and activating 800 members of the National Guard in the hopes of reducing crime, even as city officials stressed crime is already falling in the nation’s capital.

Trump mentioned New York, Baltimore, and Oakland as other cities where he wants to put the police under federal control. “This will go further," he said.

The president is holding a news conference Monday morning to discuss efforts to fight crime and clean up the nation's capital.
