Gavin Newsom special election could change the course of U.S. politics. The California Governor is considering a November 2025 statewide vote to let residents decide on new congressional maps—a bold response to Texas Republicans' mid-decade redistricting plan.

Newsom contends Trump is playing gutter politics by pressuring Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and the GOP-controlled Legislature to redraw the state’s U.S. House seats in an effort to elect five additional Republicans in next year’s midterm elections. House seats normally are redrawn only at the beginning of a decade after the decennial census.

Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a statement that roughly 250 California National Guard troops will remain in Los Angeles to protect federal personnel and property.

The Pentagon said it was ending the deployment of more National Guard troops that were sent to Los Angeles to respond to anti-ICE protests.
