Jan 27, 2020 · Iraan is a small Texas town about 55 miles west of Ozona. It was named after Ira and Ann Yates, and the pronunciation is “Ira-Ann.” The Yates donated 152 acres of land in which the town was established, after the discovery of nearby oil in 1926.

In 2021, the city of Iraan revived its beloved Alley Oop Day at Alley Oop Park and Fantasyland. The unique park was built in honor of Alley Oop, the time-traveling caveman protagonist of the eponymous comic strip. The strip was created in 1932 by local resident V.T. Hamlin.
