A small hawk (Coopers? Sharp-shinned? I can never tell!) on a neighbour’s patio umbrella and looking a bit nervous about the crows — before flying off to a more protected perch. The local crows are starting their “harvest festival” time of year, blurring the usual crow territorial lines to gather in groups where fall gastronomic delights are on offer. Chestnuts and hazelnuts are currently a local attraction, and there’s a party atmosphere in the crow world — in spite of their bedraggled mid-molt
