Most reef-building corals rely on partnerships with algae, or zooxanthellae, which live in their tissue. The coral serves as a home and provides products for photosynthesis, and in return the algae remove wastes and supply the coral with nutrients resulting from that photosynthesis. An added bonus is the algae giving corals their unique and beautiful colors! https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/tutorial_corals/coral02_zooxanthellae.html 📷: Noaa Fisheries/Damaris Torres-Puliza | NOAA Coral Re

Corals are beautiful, weird and in danger. They get getting sustenance through a unique relationship with tiny algae called zooxanthellae that produce sugar for them and they also use stinging tentacles to pull zooplankton into their mouths and stuff them into their hollow, interconnected stomach. But corals are increasingly threatened by climate change and ocean acidification and without our help they could disappear forever. You don't want to miss this gorgeous timelapse of coral-polyp mouths

Did you know coral is considered both a plant AND an animal? 🧐 〰️ The organisms that makeup coral consist of: 🌱 PLANT – algae (commonly zooxanthellae) 🪼 ANIMAL – polyps 〰️ We caught up with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority's Chief Scientist to chat about the current health of the Reef. Corals of the Genus Galaxea are a niche large polyp stony coral sometimes found in mixed reef tanks. They often have white tips and the density of these white tips gives the colony as a whole this starry, cosmic appearance and was thusly named a Galaxy Coral. | Tidal Gardens

INCREDIBLE: How these soft coral polyps move! 🪸 When it comes to most soft corals, what looks like one organism is actually a colony of tiny polyps like these that form a larger structure. While these coral colonies often resemble grasses or bushes, corals are actually animals, not plants! Oceana captured this close-up look during an expedition to Panaon Island in the Philippines. Earlier this year, the Panaon Island Protected Seascape was established to help safeguard these coral-rich waters!

These are not daisies, though they look a lot like them. These are #coralpolyps which are marine animals which together as a colony build a #coral reef. Each of these little flowers are actually mouths surrounded by tentacles called #nematocysts which capture prey or nutrients from the water column. Their soft body is a simple tube which funnel #zooplankton to the stomach. These animals are also hosts to #zooxanthellae which give the coral colour. Right now the water is warming up, many dives ar
