How Brutal were The Soviet Gulag Camps?

The Gulag was a network of forced labor camps in the Soviet Union (from 1920 t0 1960 roughly) where millions of people were imprisoned, tortured, and forced to work under harsh conditions, established by Joseph Stalin, the camps were used to punish political dissidents, intellectuals, and ordinary citizens deemed enemies of the state. The Gulag was notorious for its brutal conditions, forced labor, and high mortality rates, with an estimated 1.5 to 3 million people dying within the camp system.
