Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus, or hardy hibiscus) are practically indestructible. They are pretty but they are literal weeds in four states so you should not be worried about how you treat them. Pruning in the fall helps to control the little seedlings that pop up like ground cover. Those seeds dry up, the seed pods open and seeds drop to the ground and germinate the following spring.
