Read me! An additional plant ID skill that is important here is recognizing compound vs. simple leaves. Both Poison Ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) and Box elder (Acer negundo) have compound leaves made up of multiple individual leaflets. Both of them have three leaflets (Box elder has more when leaves are mature). Once we have a handle on the leaves we can look for arrangement. A dead giveaway for box elder is a single upright stem with poison-ivy-like leaves that are arranged opposite one another
