True story, I'm tellin' ya! We all started as beginners, and every one of us has the same potential to become incredibly at the thing we love doing. You've just got to put the hours in 🥰 | The Fernery

It's a bit of a mission to keep up some days, but yes, I really do make everything in house. From designing and cutting all the tiny fabric components, to piecing them together, adding my tiny, handmade designer labels, stitching them up and then packing and posting your orders. Would it blow your mind if I told you I even helped build my website with my husband?! | The Fernery

Transforming this courtyard fernery into a lush pondscape seamlessly enhanced its microclimate, encouraging moisture-loving plants and fostering a thriving ecosystem. Soleirolia soleirolii (baby’s tears) has flourished, creeping along the damp rocks and softening the pond’s edges, while moss has established beautifully in shaded areas, adding rich texture. ET, the resident turtle, has settled in well, frequently basking on logs and coexisting peacefully with the fish. While many assume turtles w

Have you had a play yet? My new 'build a fairy' website launched less than a week ago, and already so many of you have designed beautiful products for me to make for you! So many designs already, and more dropping this week... I can't wait to show you all the things i have in my head 🤍 | The Fernery

A little something to stop your scroll this morning... a full minute of me stitching up a bee in real-time, with quite possibly the best breathing technique you will ever learn. You can use this any time you're feeling out of kilter, when you're about to have a wobble (it works mid-wobble too). I use it when I can't doze off at night, and when my 15 year old has rolled his eyes and called me 'bruh' one too many times... the uses are endless! Oh, and if you need your own Bee, I've tagged him in t

Five years ago, during the 2020/21 lockdowns, we built a studio in the garden to move my small business into. We did the work ourselves - learning as we went along - and my business paid for the whole build down to the last brick and joist. Having worked from the dining room for the first nine years I ran the Fernery, it was the biggest game changer to not only have a place to go to work, but also to reclaim the space in the house! I've finally taken the plunge and filmed a Sewing Studio tour, w

I don't have the capacity for a clever caption today, but here's some snippets from the studio the last couple of days... all the stocking orders were completed yesterday, I'm flying now that the orders have slowed! I do have a handful of spares, so I'll pop some photos on stories later for you so you know what's what 🩷 | The Fernery

I never intended to start a business; I was just making things for my children's room as I couldn't find things I liked on the high street! 14 years later, I might be in too deep to back out now 😂 I delete an awful lot of my B-Roll without using it, as I'm a 44 year old who's never had botox, and I suffer from the worst case of RBF. There are some details about how I make my products that I will never share. I've worked far too hard to give it all away for free. I get major creative block and o

'Comfort Creator' is my vibe. As soon as I heard the term I knew it was exactly the niche I wanted to fit into. 💚 I make a living selling my products but make a point to do that without being salesy wherever possible. 💚 I share things I've picked up over 15 years of running a successful business to encourage others to dip a toe into my world. 💚 I offer tutorials, downloads and patterns to share some of the techniques I've developed to make my sell-out products. 💚 I offer a beautiful selectio

...it turns out I just needed to spend a day in my studio freemotion stitching up your fairy orders! I will NEVER get tired of these, because every single one is different, personalised to you. Take a look at the 'fairy builder' on my website, and if you can't see what you need just drop me a message. This design is my fitness fairy, she's also holding a kettlebell just out of shot 🩷 | The Fernery

The questions I get asked about my work... 🪡 What kind of machine is that? It's just a regular domestic sewing machine. It's a good one - I have a Bernina 570 - but it's basic, so likely does all the same things yours does. I work solely in Freemotion, which means I drop the feed dogs leaving me free to move the fabric where I need to, to follow my designs. 🪡 What foot is that? Freemotion can be done footless, or with a darning foot. Most are a full hoop, but I use an open toed darning foot. T

I've been creating custom labels for my handmade items for over ten years now, and after countless requests from fellow makers, I've finally put together a comprehensive guide so that you can do the same! Comment 'Label' and I'll DM you a link to download the guide. My tutorial contains a 16 page guide with clear and easy to follow, step by step instructions. It includes colour photos and screenshots, so you can easily pick a ready-made template, add your own text, and then easily make your own

If you're new here you might not know that I'm best known for my flagship product, the Fernery Fairies. You can completely personalise all of my Fairy designs - I have a really unique custom 'Fairy Builder' within each of the Fairy listings at thefernery.co.uk which allows you to create your own design and see exactly how she'll turn out on the screen - if you loved paper dollies as a child, you'll really enjoy this : ) I offer five different skin tones, twelve hair colours and ten hair styles.

Handmade... from the initial drawings, to hand picking the most beautiful fabrics and trimmings, cutting and piecing together, freemotion stitching everything (no computerised embroidery machines here, just my hands guiding the fabric). I don't hand stitch much, but absolutely everything is very much handmade. And not by a team of people - just me. I wouldn't have it any other way! (The last batch of 2025 figgy puds has hit the website today, as either decorations or bookbands - grab yours befor

I get asked about lot about the back of my work - I get it, there's a lot of stitches, you'd think it'd be messy, right? The key to keeping the stitches neat is to bring the bobbin thread up to the top of your work every time you begin stitching (I've got videos showing you how to do this - come for a browse!), so you don't get any nesting, but also no matter how tidy the back of your work is, just enclose it in the product and make sure that only the last row of stitching is visible. This is wh

Staying on the lines is actually the easy bit! That heel drop on my Bernina is a game changer though, I can't remember working without it now, but I'm pretty sure I was less efficient... Interesting point of conversation, whilst you're here; I was told off yesterday by an elderly lady on facebook for not showing the full process of my work from start to finish, including the completed product. My opinion? Social Media isn't the place for that. Just stitching the word 'Christmas' took 11 minutes,

I genuinely love questions like this - I love that people are studying my work, thinking about why I do things differently to others they've seen creating with a similar method. I love that my work provokes questions and prompts viewers to wonder if they could have a go, and possibly start thinking about how they'd do things differently. It's genuinely lovely to have these chats : ) When I started out with freemotion, my stitches were loose, scribbly, I 'coloured outside of the lines' a lot. I d

Last time I shared this tip the reel got well over a million views, and over 4k ❤️'s. It also got a LOT of snarky comments from people who knew this already... why does something going viral always bring the knobheads out to play?! So if you already know all there is yo know and clearly can't remember being in a place where you were still learning, you can scroll on by, this is not for you. But if you're learning FME and appreciate little tips that make the journey easier, you've found your peop

I had a comment on a reel this week saying my tags are pointless on such a 'small and simple' item, and they spoil my work. I beg to differ - you see, people who support small businesses are really proud of that fact, and WANT others to know where these gorgeous items come from. And we can't in all honesty be vain enough to assume that our customers will always remember our names when they're asked by a friend where that clever bookband came from, so they can buy one too. The thing that actually

Testers needed! Are you super neat at hand stitching? I need a couple of people to test a new product for me... I'll need to see your work as I'll potentially be using photos of your stitching to illustrate the product on my website, and i'm annoyingly perfectionist and picky! So let me know if you think you might be able to help, and tag your friends if you think they might be the person I need too. Also, how many times did I say really in this 60 second clip?! 😂 I've now found someone who is

I've always been one of those people who can't find what they want in the shops... in truth, my whole business started because I'm a teensy bit of a fusspot and nothing is ever *quite* what I'm looking for. So I just started making my own things - initially for my babies rooms, but gradually almost everything I couldn't find in the shops, I'd just sit down and make it myself! If you have a bit of an anxious mind like I do, it's a great way to distract yourself and get the happy hormones flowing.

I usually call myself a Maker, sometimes a Stitcher. Sometimes, I'll just say I run a small creative business when that will suffice. Just occasionally I think I'm a frickin' genius when I come up with something new and fabulous! One thing I do know is that I'm so much more than what I can do with fabric and thread and a sewing machine. On this particular day, I'd unwittingly decided to offend a massive segment of the (for arguments sake) 'fabric and thread centric' community by referring to mys

If you're a real artist, you're supposed to be messy. Disorganised, even. Leave chaos in your wake when you're creating... have a new idea and have to make it there and then, without planning, organising or tidying your space first, right? There's a place for everything in my studio, and at least once a day, everything is in that very place! Do you work like this? Can you work in chaos, or do you thrive on systems like I do? For the sake of about 8 minutes every morning, I put absolutely everyth

Screenshot it, and share to your stories or post to your grid if you have a public account, or make it your profile picture if you have a private account.
