I found this Puss Caterpillar or Asp (Megalopyge opercularis) on a sweetgum last weekend. It’s covered in hair-like setae and is one of the most venomous caterpillars in the eastern United States. As it crawls on the twig, you can occasionally see the prolegs (false legs) along the underside of its abdomen. It also has 6 true legs on its thorax near the head.
