Here’s a bird’s-eye view of Fort Purbrook, one of the famous Palmerston Forts built in the 1860s on Portsdown Hill to protect Portsmouth’s naval dockyard. Although it was never used in battle, the fort played important roles in both World Wars – from housing anti-aircraft guns to serving as barracks and a civil defence centre. After the war it even became a naval navigation school. Today, this Grade II* listed landmark is still alive with activity, home to adventure sports and community events.
