On the Elk Trail | Episode 3: Escape from Snow Migration corridors are highways for multiple ungulate species, not just elk. Pronghorn and mule deer migrate first, before snow becomes too deep to pass with their small hooves and short legs. Elk follow next, using their longer legs to push through moderate snow. Moose are last, handling the deepest snow with their long legs and snowshoe-like hooves. While our cameras only captured elk and mule deer, the message is clear: intact migration corridor

The big game migrations in Wyoming are quite a spectacle. The Jackson Elk Herd, at approximately 11,000 animals, is one of the largest in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and the largest in the state of Wyoming. The clip below shows animals of the Jackson Elk Herd transitioning off of their winter range. The bulk of these animals spent the winter on the National Elk Refuge and are now taking part in their annual spring migration back to their traditional summer ranges in the Gros Ventre Wildern

The autumn elk migration, somewhere in northwest Wyoming. WMI student Travis Zaffarano is developing methods to survey elk migrations via game cameras placed along their migratory paths. Thousands of animals have been caught migrating in front of a single camera. We are testing this method for evaluating herd composition during spring and fall migrations. We also hope to better understand the timing of migrations. This work is being done in collaboration with WGFD biologists in the Cody, Lander,

Wait a second...did that elk just say "cheese" for the camera? University of Wyoming grad student and Cody, WY native Travis Zaffarano captured this image while studying migration timing and herd demographics in Greater Yellowstone. His research evaluates how effective trail cameras are for surveying cow/calf/bull ratios. One goal is to to find out whether cameras could help reduce the need for costly aerial surveys to gather this important data that guides management. Travis put together this v

Wildlife migration is absolutely fascinating. The lead cow knows the way. 🦌 As winter sets in, the “local” elk can migrate far beyond Rocky Mountain National Park, moving to much lower elevations in search of food. Experienced cows lead these massive herds along traditional migration routes and highway crossings—knowledge passed down for generations. | The Untamed View
